Program Ratings

1. Gathering agencies are companies that collect specific statistics and data. For example, Barb collect statistics for the most viewed television programs in that current week. This is effective because it can show you the most viewed programs of that week which shows how popular that specific program is.

2. Most Popular TV Programs:
- Sherlock (FRI 21:04)
- New Year's Eve (THU 23:59)
- Eastenders (FRI 20:02)
- War and Peace (SUN 21:00)

The main reason I think that Sherlock is at the top of the list is because it was the Christmas special and it showed the return of Sherlock, after his so called death. This is effective because the producers left the series on a cliffhanger this means that the next episode will be extremely popular because the audience want to know what happens next. The main reason that New Years Eve was so popular because it was influenced by the media because it is a free fireworks show. This is effective because it shows how influential the media are and how they influence what people watch on TV.

3. Short films have to be more creative when using data because they are not as popular as main stream programming. For example, agencies such as Barb analyse data through how many views the program got. On the other hand with short film it is very rare that you see them on TV. This is effective because it is hard to analyse the data of short films because they are never on mainstream Chanel. Therefore the solution to this is to use other data to analyse short films. For example, Facebook and YouTube hits. This is effective because it can increase the popularity reported on short films as it is a corrects statistic.

4. Short film directors are interested in RAJAR data because they use the radio to advertise. For example, it is unlikely a shot film will be advertised on TV because it costs to much for the director. Therefore they will appear on a talk show to advertise their show. This is effective because after the show they might use RAJAR to see how popular their talk show is. This could lead to the film getting more views due to how popular his show is.

Self Generated Research

Self generated research is research carried out by yourself in order to help you with a certain subject. For example, you could create your own survey instead of using someone else's. This is effective because it means you do not have to worry about copyrighting. The advantages of self generated research is that it is your own work so you do not have to copy right it. Another advantage is that it can save money because it is your own research. This is effective because you can save money and use it in other areas. For example, if your are creating a short film and there is a scene where you want to use a scene that was not created by you. This is a bad idea because you might get copy righted and thus could lead to you appearing in court.

Readership Circulation Figures & Circulation Figures

Circulation Figures
Circulation figures are how popular something is. This applies to my situation because it shows how popular something is without spending any money.

Readership Circulation Figures
A newspaper's circulation is the number of copies it distributes on an average day. Circulation is one of the principal factors used to set advertising rates. Circulation is not always the same as copies sold, often called paid circulation, since some newspapers are distributed without cost to the reader.

Example:

This is the most read newspapers in Ireland. This applies to my research because this monitors what my audience prefers this can  help me brand Fivestar as a more popular company.

Sales of DVD's

This is the Disney Pixar Short Films Collection 2 and it include some of the most popular short films out there and the price of this according to Amazon is £4.99. This is effective because they are one of the most popular short film companies out there and they are so cheap. This applys to me because if I wanted to distribute short films then I would have to make it cheaper than them to compete but it costs a lot to make DVD's so therefore, I will make minimal profit.

Ratings

Ratings are a classification or ranking of someone or something based on a comparative assessment of their quality, standard, or performance.

This applier to my research because it helps me understand what people rate projects before I see them. This is effective because I already have an idea of the quality of the film before I see it.

Responses to Advertising Campaigns

This advert is a positive advert because it is suggesting instead of being annoyed that you have had 140 calories, that you look on the brighter side by saying their are happy calories. This is effective because it is positive media and it promotes Coca Cola as a happy company which can increase sales and revenue for the company.

This is a negative advert for Think and it is about how she was on the phone with her husband while he was driving therefore it lead to his death because he crashed. This is a negative advert because it is directly blaiming the wife for the husbands death and it is suggesting that if she just waited till he got home then his husband will not be dead. The messege for this advert is to not call someone while they are driving.

This apply's to short film because if i want to reflect my review in a positive light then I will use a positive advert but if I want it in a negative light then I will use a negative advert.

secondary research- The importance of research in short films.

The first main thing to note is that research is probably the most important thing in making a short film. For example as shown in the book titled Writing the Short Film. Copper et al states that, "We are, however, suggesting that you become curious in human behavior." (2012). This is effective because if you are making a short film then the subject you are focusing on has to be researched in order to fully construct a great understanding for the audience. This could lead to your short film being really popular around your genre of film.

The second reason why research is important is because it can inform you on a specific topic when making a short film. A really accessible place is to access is the internet. For example, imagine you are making a short film on a specific topic. Then using the internet can inform you on that specific topic of issue. This is effective because this can save you time because the internet is faster than going to the library and reading a book.

The importance of research is key so in order to receive good research then you would have to visit a website. A really good place to get feedback for the importance of research is a forum. A forum is a website where you can share feedback and research with other people. The purpose of a forum is that it can offer you feedback from specific people who are interested in your specific enquiry. A forum is important to research because it can offer you feedback. For example, if you wanted people to complete a specific survey on a certain subject then you can post your questionnaire on a forum about your subject to receive helpful feedback. This is effective because it will speed up time in which you can gather feedback which can lead to you completing more tasks.

The importance of research is key again because if your are new producer and you want to make a short film then you might want some helpful tips to help you out. A good place to help gain feed back is an journal. A journal is is an academic book that can help you understand a certain topic. The purpose of a journal is to inform and educate people on a certain subject. This shows the importance of research because it can educate you on making short films. For example, if you are a new producer and you want to understand the tips in making a short film then you can read a journal by an experienced producer in howto make an short film. This is effective because he can inform in common mistakes made by novice producers, which can make the new producer check his errors.

Attitude to Media Products

Comparative Analysis
Looking at the quantitative data I have gathered I can tell Josh and Benny Safdlee are very popular among the short film genre. For example with their first YouTube video The Black Baloon, has over 80,000 views. This is effective because you usually do not associate short films as really popular.
On the other hand, Michael Demetriou is not as popular as the the previous pair. For example, Safdlee's first film accumulated 80,000 views where as Michael Demetriou's Telephone only gathered 3983 views. Judging by these results i can concluded that he is not very popular among the short film genre scene.

Survey monkey analysed data

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/NG6N3W8

The first question was "What is your favorite short film genre?" and the three options to choose from were Action, Horror and Thriller. 50% of the people I asked said that action was their favorite with horror coming in second with 30% and Thriller coming in lat with 20%. From this I can conclude that if I want to please my audience then I will need to make a Action film. This is effective because this is the type of film I want to make.

The second question I asked my panel was "Have you heard of these short film directors?" Surprisingly, a whooping 100% said they had not heard of all of them. From this I can conclude that short films are not that popular anymore because know-one has heard of these directors. This is effective because the films they have directed received good reviews.

The fourth question I asked my panel was "Rank these three films in order of which you thought was the best?" The three options were Imagine, Alone and The Desk. 80% of the people I asked thought that alone was the best and 20% thought The desk was the best. However, Imagine was never first even though it had the best rewards out of all three. I can conclude from this that critics options are different from the audiences. This is effective because critics can judge what people see.

The next question I asked my panel was "What age group do you feel that the short film genre mostly aims at?" 90% chose 36 and over while the remaining 10% chose 27-35 year-olds. I can conclude from this that short films are outdated and are not that popular anymore. This is effective because I will most likely loose money if I choose to make a short film.

The final question I asked my panel was "Where are you most likely be willing to watch a short film?" A 100% answered that they would watch it online. I can conclude from this that everything is more popular online. This is effective because it is cheaper for me to distribute.

Fanzines Websites

The Question: Why would fanzines help short film producers build larger audiences?

A fanzine is defined as a magazine, usually produced by amateurs, for fans of a particular performer, group, or form of entertainment. Fanzines help build larger audiences for short films because they are not advertised as much as feature length films. For example if you visit your local cinema you will see films like James Bond and the Hunger Games being advertised but it is very rare that you will see a short film advertised. This is because short films only attract a certain genre of people. This is effective because fanzines can advertise their short films to a small group of people who are interested in watching a short film. A second reason is that it is created by fans so it will review all the good films not just ones made by a particular company. For example a film review made by a company may review the film as bad just because it was created by a rival company. This is effective because it creates bad publicity for the producer of the short film.

Government Statistics

Official statistics are statistics published by government agencies or other public bodies such as international organizations. They provide quantitative or qualitative information on all major areas of citizens' lives, such as economic and social development, living conditions, health, education, and the environment.

This applies to my situation because they are reliable because they come straight from the government. This is effective because secondary research is not usually reliable but this comes straight form the government

Books & Journals

Books
Books are a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers.

This applies to my situation because Books are a good way of researching about certain peoples views or opinions. This is effective because it is a really easy way to look at other peoples research this can save time and money.

Journals
A journal is a daily record of news and events of a personal nature; a diary.

This applies to my situation because this is another really effective way to see other peoples research and notes. This will save time and money as I dont have to find my own research.

advantages and disadvantages of quantitative research

Advantages
. Allow for a broader study, involving a greater number of subjects, and enhancing the generalisation of the results.
. Can allow for greater objectivity and accuracy of results. Generally, quantitative methods are designed to provide summaries of data that support generalisations about the phenomenon under study. In order to accomplish this, quantitative research usually involves few variables and many cases, and employs prescribed procedures to ensure validity and reliability.
. Using standards means that the research can be replicated, and then analysed and compared with similar studies.
. Personal bias can be avoided by researchers keeping a 'distance' from participating subjects and employing subjects unknown to them.

Disadvantages
. Collect a much narrower and sometimes superficial dataset.
. Results are limited as they provide numerical descriptions rather than detailed narrative and generally provide less elaborate accounts of human perception.
. The research is often carried out in an unnatural, artificial environment so that a level of control can be applied to the exercise.
. Preset answers will not necessarily reflect how people really feel about a subject and in some cases might just be the closest match.

Summary
This type of research will help my short film review because i will need to analyse this type of research to understand what the general opinion of a film is. This is effective because it will make me look like i know what the general opinion of the film is. It is important to short films because they would need this research to find out what type of short films people like. This is effective because it could lead to a great short film.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Qualitative Research

Advantages
. Issues and subjects can be evaluated in detail.
. Interviews are not limited to certain questions and can be redirected or guided by researchers in real time.
. The direction and framework of research can be revised quickly as soon as fresh information and findings emerge.
. The data in qualitative research depends on human research and this is more powerful than quantitative.
. Complexities and subtleties about the subject of the research or the topic covered is usually missed by many positivist inquires.

Disadvantages
. The quality of research is heavily dependent on the skills of the research and can be easily influenced by personal problems and issues of the researcher.
. It is more difficult assess, demonstrate and maintain.
. The quality of the data collected is more time consuming.
. This type of research is not accepted in most communities
. The presence of researcher in the process of data gathering is unavoidable and can therefore affect     or influence the responses of subjects.

Conclusion
All these types of research are useful for making my review for a short film because i will need qualitative research to produce a good review. For example, one of the advantages is that 'issues and subjects can be evaluated in detail.' This is useful because i will use advantage when creating my review.

Summary:
The one thing i noticed with these short films were that the shorter the budget the higher it was rated on IMDb. This is effective because it proves that if the budget is cheaper then the better the short film is. The advantage of this source is that it really shows how good the film is. The disadvantage is that this source can be unreliable, for example a short film could have a rating of 8 but it was only reviewed by 12 people then i is unreliable because most people haven't seen it.
